Yay Emulsion Screen Printing!

It was really awesome this morning learning the process of exposing the emulsion screens to the design on the big old light table thing. It's so old and ancient but I'm not complaining about the result. It's handy to do all of that over at G3 with the infrared lights and big sink for washing it out.

Here's an image of the instructions for using the machine:

just gotta remember 90, 90, 90.
I'm not too sure if the vaccum is worth it but it must be there for a reason. Also I think it might need to be exposed just a little longer than 90 seconds because some of the fine lines didn't get quite all out.
Though I think that was partly my fault for how old the print on the plastic was. It had been in my bag for a while and some black had scratched off. Luckily there was lots of black tape around so I cut bits off and stuck them on the faded bits.

It's a pretty old machine, SIT got it in the 80s apparently! But it was possibly made in the 50s. It's certainly not as fancy as the ones I've seen in recent videos at professional screen printing places.

then washed in the sink. I'm pretty sure you can wash it in light but may as well be safe than sorry. I think I'd rather use a rough sponge than a scrubbing brush, I was afraid the thin wing lines might have been scrubbed off, but maybe I was too gentle?
I think the wings were too thin in the print anyway.

Finished screen! It's sooo awesome! there's a couple patches but that's ok for the first try. I put two designs on the screen because there was lots of room, these screens are much bigger than my ones I bought. It's interesting that this emulsion is red, I think the speedball kind is green.
I think I'll collect it soon from G3 after it dries. I don't think I can wait a week to use it!
I'm so excited!

I don't think there will be enough screens for everyone in the class (a couple people messed theirs up). So I think I will ask Rosalie if I'll be able to find a screen that's not being used and put emulsion on that. Maybe she could show me how to do that? Even if she could let me know where they source the bigger screens from. they wouldn't be getting rid of them would they?

This will be my next one
I put them on a broken screen to test if they'd all fit on one and they do! When printing I'd just have to block off the ones I'm not printing.
