This video in particular is interesting and relevant to the game paper. It's talking about what games and what cores are going to be easiest to finish for a first game.
This list gives me insight on which games will be easiest to make and finish:
I think I will be able to finish my visual novel regardless as story is finished and the art almost is also.
But my minigames within the visual novel are what I need to decide on the minimum viable options.
The flying race has:
- Fletcher flying at a constant speed
- up and down movement
- Two different obstacles in 3 sections for now
- flashing hurt and slow down
- 'ghost' kahu to make it feel like a race
- a background with finish line
- finish line map line thing with the characters on to know where the end is
I asked my sister the other day what her favourite games were on Animal Jam (it's like old club penguin).
She showed me her favourite and it's basically the game I want to make but in the ocean as dolphins:
This is literally what I want to make but mine is with only one character and fairies flying.
Here's another video of someone playing:

Take notes of all the animation of the dolphin and the obstacles when they're hit.
It's the same route each time I think but there is normal play and play pro.

Along the bottom is what I mean about the start to finish guide on where you are ^
The rings are boosts so the more you get the more you'll get ahead, but if you hit and obstacle you'll slow down a bit.
In my race game I think I'll only have obstacles and the only way to win is to not get hit by any of them.
Depending on how easy it is to randomly generate, I think it'd be better to have the obstacles be randomly generated each time but that would be after getting one route work.
I found this game on miniclip:
makes me wonder which would be easier, using arrows or making the character the mouse to move around. Would this effect taking the game into mobile? It does mean that the character can go forward and back though.
I've found this game on miniclip which is the exact controls I want:
It's a really nice style and design. there are options of upgrading which aren't relevant to me at the moment. It's an endless runner though.
It has a mobile version with the arrows on the left side:
